Working With A Reluctant Retriever

April 5 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm BST

With Featured Expert Claire Denyer

This subject is very close to my heart as we see many dogs who appear to have little to no desire to retrieve. It’s quite a common problem. We have many dogs come to us for training who other trainers have turned away or deemed “no good”. Unfortunately, this problem can cause dogs to be overlooked or moved on in the competition world. So, over the last few years working with reluctant retrievers or dogs lacking drive and enthusiasm has become a passion.

We will look at some of the common reasons why things go wrong with retrieves.

Suitable for:

Dogs who have little/no desire to retrieve
Dogs who mess about once they have the retrieve
Dogs who lose interest or seem distracted
Dogs who Spit out the dummy
Not suitable for:
Dogs who resource guard the retrieve (this should be addressed in a behaviour consultation)
Dogs who are aggressive to other dogs or people
Dogs with recall issues
The day will be a mix of theory and practical work and will cover:
Igniting the prey drive
Guided learning
The importance of play and building desire
Tools to help build a desire to retrieve
How to change an action or behaviour
Teaching a new action or behaviour through repetition
How to start formalising the retrieve
